“Understanding Breath Patterns.”

Now, taking a moment to talk, discuss and delve into the topic on the purpose of the breath as it relates to health and wellness. As we have stated before, Ibn Sina, the Master-guiding Physician of the Nature’s First Path Practice, placed special emphasis on regulating and being focused on the breath for internal healing and balance.

One point that Ibn Sina espoused was that the breaths of the human being are derived from one essential breath when the baby enters the realm of this world. Knowing this, means that the lifespan of someone, is basically divided by breaths; this makes everyday life- sacred. This breath lingers in the body and affects various parts of the humors- actually giving it life Force, influencing health or stagnation in health.

Ibn Sina, actually took it a step further by saying that this process between the breath and how it plays out in the body, concludes itself as an actual Ray of Light. Now, some 1000 years later, some scientists have been able to record photons of light on individuals who were engaged in deep meditation and breath regulation. This also, is the main foundation of the Naqshbandi Sufi Order: that life is divided by breaths‘Hosh Dar Dam.’

So what exactly impacts the flow of breath as it relates to health and wellness? Emotions.

Joy: Ibn Sina describes this as a form of Internal Delight. When the body is in this state, air, breathing and the channels are open properly and blockages are minimal if it all. He then concluded that the human being cannot maintain this state continuously, the health seeker should strive for balance in life for optimal wellness.

Gladness & Satisfaction:  This is where the breathing becomes expansive and tries to pull in all of the Vital Air around the person.

Sadness & Grief:  This is where the flow of breathing and starts to slow. If the person remains in this state, permanent blockages can occur and this is when heart attacks and strokes can, and often do occur in addition to any nutritional deficiency that the person may be dealing with.

Fear: The pulse becomes rapid and yet scanty at the same time. Over time, the scanty breathing can also reverse to sadness. Scanty breathing means irregular heart coherence.

Anger & Rancor: These two states, makes the breathing shallow. Along with shallow breathing comes forgetfulness of the act of breathing- forgetting to focus then heading towards the danger zones of stress and imbalance.

But, Ibn Sina stresses that one of the main things about breath regulation is that we flow between these emotional states and the whole purpose of living is: “Are we able to choose the appropriate response at the appropriate time?” At the core, the soul and the subconscious mostly seeks out pleasure and joy of some kind, while trying to overcome sadness and grief. When you have that understanding and then place it against the backdrop of nutrition and movement, this is what is known as “health”, or lack thereof.

The repletion of Joy with a moist breath, over a dry state makes for life well lived according to Ibn Sina. If anything is to be remembered about the breath: it is that it plays an important role in the health of a person, and not to be neglected.  The key organs that are affected in this process are the heart and the liver. Vital stimulating air flows through the heart where the: Spark of Life resides and on through the liver, where the filtering process takes place.

Eastern Health Practitioners have known this for thousands of years and made it a part of the healing curriculum for their students. Then the students passed this information down to the sick and ailing individual: making healing holistic. If you have been looking to become more breath aware there are many online tools available, as well as applications for phones to help you become more inline and in-touch with the present moment.
