It has been said that one of the first senses that we acquire and one of the first to faded away from us is our sense of hearing. In this specific piece, we want to cover and take time to discuss the health our not just our ears, but the ear function of hearing. While it is assumed that hearing loss is an absolute given as we age, there is evidence to show that from a Naturopathic perspective, this doesn’t have to be the case and a specific given. When special attention and focus is given towards preventative measures and lifestyle medicine approaches, we can maintain our natural senses to the best of our ability everyday through the choices that we make.
If you are wondering what some specific ways and approaches to maintain our hearing through the channel of Naturopathy, we will start with understanding what the essential nutrients are that keep your hearing from becoming compromised in the beginning. The key to maintaining the vitality of your senses is to start working on them early. One of the key and most important of the nutrients that the ears need to keep good hearing is the element of magnesium rich foods and herbs. Magnesium helps keep the ear channels clear and stable and strong allowing the sense of hearing to operate at its highest. But most importantly it protects the cells of the inner ear. Some of the best food sources of magnesium are: dark chocolate, cashews, flax seeds, whole grains, avocados, spinach and bananas. Potassium is another essential nutrient that is so important to hearing health; it helps with the protection of the fluid of the inner ear. Excellent sources of potassium for the ear are: cantaloupe, watermelon and edamame.
From there, then the nutrient of folate comes in to help absorb the iron and the other nutrients to help the ears able to handle the everyday micro-stressors of listening and variations in decibel volumes. Great sources of folate are Brussels sprouts, lemons, melons and sunflower seeds. At this point it should be coming in clear that the key to elevated hearing is taking a path in which, we pay special attention to the micronutrients that we are consuming. And it is these micronutrients that are also crucial in healing our bodies in other ways, affecting different parts of our bodies.
Omega 3’s act as the overall solidifier in ear and hearing health by giving the ears enough fatty acids to keep the ear working as they should. Coincidentally, some of the same nutrients that keep the eyes vital, are the same ones that keep the ears vital. We can get clean sources of Omega 3’s through sources of walnuts, purslane and chia seeds.
The approach to organ and sense healing works best when it is Holistic in the approach towards lifelong wellness. The long-term health of our ears and hearing often gets overlooked by many when considering taking care of mostly our exterior qualities. Keeping the health of our senses strong and going can serve and support us when we need it most, when we are in our later years. But until then, we still need vital hearing today.
