Relevance of The Canon of Medicine Today.

Relevance of The Canon of Medicine Today.

The Canon of Medicine. A Magnum Opus written, encyclopedia on body, healing and Medical practice written in the 9th century by Avicenna (Ibin Sina). Few series of written Medical books that have impacted the world the way that it has. Although there were many. We revisit this topic again to go over the impact in Medical history, and also how and why Holistic Healers have made use of herbal formulas, nutritional compounds and theory are still being used today.

Giving credit where credit is due, the Canon of Medicine, remembering that it was used even up until the 17th Century in parts of Europe as a main point of health reference for Medical Doctors. And as far as today’s time is concerned, Healers want to know about medical theory, but they also want to return to the herbs and the ways that are natural. They want to uncover the hidden and open truth about this foundational book series.

How is it laid out? In today’s time, Kazi publications has translated the series into 5 volumes, and translated in a way that it can be referenced easily with liner notes and points of reference. Let us consider the individual volumes.

Volume 1. General Medicine.

Ibn Sina starts the series actually on a discussion related to the Soul and the 4 humors and how all is impacted by Hot, Wet, Cold and Dry and vice-versa  From there, he goes into detail on the origins and causes of disease.

Volume 2. Natural Pharmaceuticals.

In this part of the volume, Ibn Sina categorizes hundreds of herbs and other nutrients according to Hot or Cold temperament. In addition to this, he lists all of the herbs with their Arabic, Persian, Latin and Greek names.

Volume 3. Special Pathologies.

Here he explains how some specific diseases are related to specific organs and bodily sections and how this is even related to Temperaments in overall wellness.

Volume 4. Systematic Diseases.- Orthopedics and Cosmetics.

Ibn Sina takes time to describe in detail how to take care of the skin, bones and muscles. He even explains how temperature, mood and other considerations affect them. A significant portion of this volume is given to the importance of massage as well.

Volume 5. Pharmacopia.

In this section of the Canon, you will find with its pages herbal healing combinations for specific ailments and the Doctors of that time who formulated them. This shows the degree of respect that Ibn Sina had for his healing predecessors as well as the other Physicians who were living in his lifetime.

When you take into account all of the volumes, it is clear that the Canon of Medicine is still relevant for us today. Why? For one of the first reasons, many of the healing formulas are still effective, especially now that degenerative diseases are on the rise. The fact that the Canon discusses the Soul shows that there is a Spiritual element to healing, and much of it deals with the unseen world. And this is something that people have been seeking more and more; the connection between physical ailments and spiritual links. When read back to back, we can see how the topic of healing the body was taken very seriously, due to the attention to detail. The Canon is used within the NFP Practice, and has been a source of relief for Patients over the years.
